Why Was Alexander Technique Invented?
The Alexander Technique was originally put together by a performer in the field of elocution (pre-1900, before microphones
were invented) so he could continuously improve his own freedom of expression over time.
F. M. Alexander's voice work for performance use was later adapted to more generally benefit others in a private lesson format.
His first graduate of his first teacher training course in the 1930s, named Marj Barstow, originated a classroom
application style of teaching.
...and Who Uses A. T. For What Purpose?
Alexander Technique today has practical, general answers for anyone in the circumstance of learning a new skill,
polishing a performing art or hobby, or those who need to problem solve for easier ways to move. Although known for
its effectiveness for remedial problems, A.T. was originally designed for those who notice themselves gradually
declining by repeating outdated or mistaken routines that lead them in the wrong direction.
It's designed as self-help for people who can't seem to stop doing what they don't want or who can't improve by will power alone.
Alexander Technique is also for those who wonder why they can't continue to improve at a skill or art, no matter how
persistent or how much effort they put into practicing. In a sense, Alexander Technique is an artistic trade secret
of how to gain or bring out "talent."
Alexander Technique is most often know for being used as a coping skill or mitigation for those who haven't completely recovered
their strength or former ability after a healed injury. It can often help people to stop doing what was intended to be a
temporary, coping compensation during healing. A.T. can sometimes be a constructive workaround for those who
have been told they must give up doing an action or hobby that is causing them difficulty or pain.
...How Does A.T. Work?
Based on reasoning, foresight and strategic thinking, Alexander Technique uses a systematic template for learning & revising skill building. Benefits are gained by having students prevent, during movement, the buried conflicted, habitual priorities that lie underneath their ability to perceive crucial differences. As these forgotten habitual priorties are stopped, insights and improvements come forward spontaneously and effortlessly.
The results are an experience of feeling at home in one's body and an adventurous excitement
about discovery and skill building, possibly freeing up lifelong frustrations. Using "The Technique" makes
every-day situations less boring, lends pleasure and a new field of focus into being in motion and shows a hopeful,
gradual pathway toward joyful, unlimited constructive progress.

Learn in this Activity Style Class Series:
Titled: "Thinking In Activity", learn to translate
the power of Alexander Technique's principles and unique terms into practical abilities that can be taken home with you.
LIVING ANATOMY
BODY LANGUAGE PERCEPTION
CONSTRUCTIVE SELF OBSERVATION OF YOUR OWN THINKING AND RESPONSE STRATEGIES
BECOME FAMILIAR WITH YOUR OWN BEST WAYS TO LEARN
DETOUR OR PREVENT WHAT YOU ARE WASTING ENERGY DOING THAT IS IN THE WAY OF SUCCEEDING
HOW TO MAKE A DELIBERATE, PURPOSEFUL CHOICE TO DO WHAT YOU WANT INSTEAD OF REPEATING MISTAKES
HOW TO DESCRIBE AND EVALUATE RESULTS; HOW TO DEFINE YOUR OWN CRITERIA AND PRIORITIES
HOW TO RECOGNIZE PROGRESS AS IT IS HAPPENING
What to Expect in Class
To first review these terms in action and show what they mean, short illustrated lectures will outline Alexander's principles. Verbal and nonverbal content will be studied; as well as the power of "incubating" to make happy serendipity stick. You'll study how to perceive and learn what to do about the effects of repetitive habitual mannerisms that are designed to be overlooked. You will also learn ways to prevent repeating mistakes.
New "tricks of the trade" for Self Education
Participants practice going beyond "trial and error" into their own new discoveries with fun games, curious pieces of information such as about perceptual illusions and paradoxes, observing others in class, doing group activities & experimenting with short sample coached lessons with the teacher. You will get the hands-on guidance of an experienced Alexander Technique teacher at some point during each class. These experiments start out with a short lecture; then simple motions are used as forms for experimentation such as walking, turning the head, moving the limbs or head, shifting balance, etc. These simple actions will continue to be repeated for those who join the class ongoing, they will also be practiced with one-on-one help from the teacher as class starts and ends while class members arrive or are leaving. This practice helps anchor the new ways and offers structured, positive & practical observations and affirmations about learning. These are essentially mini-lesson with hands-on turns with the teacher while the rest of the class observes and asks questions.
Please Bring Your "Props" to Class!
After your third class and if it is possible, please bring your important "props" and "tools" that you might use to teach a beginner your movement sport, skill or art; a one minute lesson in what you can teach may be asked for, (but not required.) Franis' teaching skill that integrates Alexander principles is juggling; participants can learn to juggle very easy juggling sticks if desired, as well as watching or participating in beginner's lesson topics taught by others. If you do not teach a hobby, performance or skill, you may use reading from a book as your activity, or any every-day action, past time, skill or work of your choice.
Provided at the workshop
If facilities permit, a half hour previously televised video featuring a notable Alexander teacher may be shown - to be announced.
A handbook reviewing the Alexander Technique principles that was written by Engel will be available for purchase.
Everyone's height may be measured at the start of the class, because some adults gain up to an inch of height by the end of the whole class series.
Recommended will be a way to refresh during your work breaks by resting semi-supine. One cot will be provided for teaching and resting purposes during class and for those who cannot get down onto the floor. If possible, wearing loose pants or shorts is recommended; please bring your own towel or pad if you can get onto the floor without assistance.

The easy juggling toy that will be provided in the workshop is named "Flowersticks". It is a slowed down variation on a much faster juggling toy called "Devil's Sticks," which is a baton spun in the air by two hand sticks. If you don't feel up to appearing foolish, you may substitute reading from a book as an activity, or provide a suggestion for any other activity of your choice.
